York bats help sweep Spires in Thursday doubleheader

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The York University baseball team picked up a sweep at Saint Mary on Thursday, winning by scores of 14-1 and 7-1.

The Panthers are now 23-21 on the season, including 20-15 in KCAC action.

York jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Nicholas DeMonte was hit by a pitch and took second on Jose Martinez's base hit. With the bases loaded thanks to a walk to Ian Heck, Cesar Galvan recorded a single to knock in DeMonte.

The score remained the same until the sixth. With one down, Cameron Reeve drew a walk and DeMonte singled to put two on base. Martinez plated Reeve with a base hit to center field. Heck drew a base on balls and Galvan cleared the bags with a grand slam for a 6-0 advantage. 

The Panthers solidified the outcome in the fifth with a massive offensive outburst. With Reeve and DeMonte on base, Martinez drove in Reeve on a single. Heck put a ball into right field for a hit, driving in DeMonte. Galvan knocked in Martinez with a base hit to right field to make it 9-0. After Trevor Peterson singled to load the bases, Ryan Romero launched the team's second grand slam of the game for a 13-0 margin.

Sam Hodoly continued the frame with a double to center field. Nathan Eisenmenger entered as a pinch runner and scored on Reeve's single to center field. 

For the game, Martinez led the way with four hits and two RBI. Galvan tallied three hits and drove in six. He and Romero each had grand slams. DeMonte, Peterson, Romero and Hodoly had two hits apiece. DeMonte scored three times while Martinez, Galvan, Heck and Reeve crossed home twice.

On the mound, James McCown went the distance and had two strikeouts. He threw just 70 pitches for the win. 

Game two saw the Panthers pounce on the home team with five runs in the first two at bats. DeMonte started the game with a base hit to right field and hustled to third on Martinez's single to left field. A sacrifice fly by Heck made it 1-0. After Romero singled to put two on, Trevor Peterson smashed a three-run shot for a 4-0 advantage.

Bryce Gorecki launched a solo shot to lead off the second for a five-run cushion.

Up 5-0 in the seventh, DeMonte recorded a solo blast with one away for a 6-1 lead. With one away, Heck singled and took second on Galvan's base hit. Romero drove in Heck on a single for the six-run margin.

Austin Petersen worked a scoreless seventh inning to complete the victory.

For the game, DeMonte and Romero had three hits apiece while Austin Grant and Martinez had two hits each. DeMonte, Gorecki and Peterson registered home runs. Peterson drove in three while DeMonte crossed home twice.

On the mound, Bryce Woodard got the start and worked six frames for the win. He gave up one run on six hits and had a strikeout.
