Panthers complete the sweep of Spires with ninth-inning rally

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The York University baseball team scored six unanswered runs, including three in the ninth, to pick up a 9-6 win at Saint Mary Friday afternoon.

The Panthers wrap up the regular season with a 24-21 ledger, including a 21-15 record in KCAC action.

York jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Nicholas DeMonte and Jose Martinez were each hit by pitches before Ian Heck doubled home DeMonte for a 1-0 advantage. Nathan Eisenmenger entered as a pinch runner for Heck and he used his speed to score on a wild pitch – as did Martinez – for an early three-run cushion.

Saint Mary plated a run in the first and fourth innings to make it a 3-2 game.

Down 6-3 in the seventh, Tyren Dorrance singled and took second on a walk to Cameron Reeve. After moving to third on a flay-out, a walk to Martinez loaded the bags. Heck was hit by a pitch, pushing across Dorrance. Cesar Galvan ripped a single into the outfield, knocking in Reeve. Two batters later, Sam Hodoly drew a walk to tie the contest.

In the ninth, Heck led off the stanza by singling down the left field line and Galvan made the opposition pay with a two-run blast. Ryan Romero walked and scored on the ensuing play when Hodoly singled.

For the game, Galvan, Heck, Hodoly and Reeve had two hits apiece. Galvan led the way with three RBI and Heck added two. Martinez crossed home twice.

On the mound, Heck threw five innings and gave up two runs on seven hits. He had four strikeouts. Sam Maudsley worked one-third of an inning before giving way to Ruben Colliander for two-thirds of an inning. Anthony Del Rio worked the final three innings for the win.

The Panthers will compete in the KCAC Tournament. A complete bracket will be published in the near future. Live video and stats will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
