Panthers battle on day one of Clarke Invitational

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The York University volleyball team lost a pair of contests Friday evening, falling 3-2 to Saint Ambrose before dropping a 3-1 match to Waldorf.

The Panthers are now 0-4 on the young season.

Against SAU, York lost the match 25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 22-25, 13-15.

Against Saint Ambrose, head coach Irick Gardner's team was led by Florencia Felmer's 17-kill, eight-dig performance. She hit .214 in the match. Brianna Lemke tallied 12 kills and five digs while Kensey Clifton notched 19 assists, seven digs and five kills while hitting .833.

Valentina Jimenez was outstanding on the back line, notching 28 digs. She also contributed four assists. Meadow Nusbaum added 19 assists and five digs. Isidora Pa Diaz was solid up front, totaling six blocks to go along with four kills.

For the match, York hit .222 in the first set while forcing SAU to -.029. The Panthers held advantages in the next two frames as well. York hit .135 in the second stanza and .091 in the third frame.

The Panthers jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the opener off an error. York maintained the advantage and led 21-16 off another miscue by the designated home team. Felmer converted on back-to-back kills before Kaylee Weigel chipped in one. Felmer finished the set with another point off a pass from Clifton.

Near the midway point of the second set, Weigel slammed home a pass from Elena Brown for a 16-13 edge. Up 18-14, Baker accounted for a point. Leading 19-18, Emma Kerley pushed the advantage to two, 20-18. Up 24-23, Clifton secured the set with the kill.

After dropping the next two frames, York led 3-0 in the fifth stanza. Two of the points were off blocks while Felmer added a kill for a point. SAU knotted it moments later and the home team took a 7-6 lead. York battled, tying the set at 13-13 on a kill by Felmer. However, back-to-back points by SAU ended the match.  

Against Waldorf, York claimed the first set in decisive action before falling to the designated home team the next three sets. Set scores were 25-17, 23-25, 21-25 and 22-25.

For the match, Lemke led the way with 13 kills. Weigel added 11 while Felmer chipped in 11. Kerley managed to notch six kills in the loss.

Clifton led the setters with 17 assists while Nusbaum added 16.

Defensively, Felmer recorded a double-double with a 14-dig effort. Jimenez registered 21 digs while Clifton amassed a double-double with 10 digs.

Felmer served up three aces while Jassania Joseph led the defense with two total blocks.

York scored the first six points of the set and never looked back. Four of the first six points were errors by the designated home team while Weigel and Felmer tallied kills for the six-point advantage. Up 6-1, Felmer posted a kill. After two mistakes by Waldorf, Felmer split the defense with an ace.

With the score at 16-6, Felmer and Kerley slammed home kills before an error pushed the advantage to 18-7. The home team pulled within 10, but Lemke answered with a point. Up 22-14, Lemke garnered back-to-back kills. Although Waldorf sliced into the defense, Kerley ended the stanza with a kill.

Despite three close sets, Waldorf managed to pick up the four-set win.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they take on Clarke University at 11 a.m., and Indiana University Northwest at 1 p.m.
