Volleyball: Panthers win final two matches on the weekend

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The York University volleyball team picked up a pair of victories on Saturday, besting Clarke 3-0 and Indiana University Northwest 3-0.

The squad bested Clarke Saturday morning by scores of 25-23, 25-18, 25-22 for its first victory of the season.

The Panthers are now 2-4 on the young season.

Against Clarke, head coach Irick Gardner's team was led by Florencia Felmer's near double-double effort of nine kills and 11 digs. For good measure, she served up four aces. Brianna Lemke added eight kills while Kaylee Weigel slammed home five kills.

Kensey Clifton dished out 16 assists while Meadow Nusbaum chipped in 12.

Defensively, Ambar Ortiz posted 16 digs and Valentina Jimenez notched 15.

Tied at 13-13 in the first set, Felmer's aces broke the tie and the team never looked back. Isidora Pa Diaz blocked an attempt for a two-point cushion. Tied at 23-23, Clifton found Weigel for a kill. Nusbaum hit Lemke for the final point of the first frame.

Up 20-16 in the second set, Felmer started a small spurt with a point. Two straight miscues by Clarke pushed the score to 23-16. Weigel and Lemke found the court for the Panthers' final two points of the stanza.

The tightly contested third set saw York hold a narrow 22-21 advantage. A service error pushed the margin to two before Lemke hammered home a kill. Two plays later, Clifton hit Lemke again for the final point of the contest.

For the match, the team hit .130 and dished out 31 assists on 31 kills. The squad posted 60 digs, eight blocks and seven aces.

Against Indiana University Northwest, York posted the victory by scores of 25-23, 25-19 and 25-23.

For the match, Lemke led the way with 15 kills. Weigel hit for a team-best .417 hitting percentage while picking up seven kills.

Clifton dished out 22 assists in the contest, with Nusbaum notching 16. 

The defense was led by the dyad of Florencia Felmer and Valentina Jimenez who each registered 10 digs. 

In a back-and-forth first set, York took a 13-11 lead on a pair of errors by the RedHawks. Felmer served up an ace before another miscue gave the Panthers a four-point advantage. Down 19-17, Lemke posted a pair of kills while a miscue by the visitors gave York the 20-19 edge. Trailing 22-21, the Panthers rattled off four of the next five points for the 25-23 win. Liberty Baker had a pair of kills during the run.

A 4-0 spurt early in the second stanza pushed the score to 10-4 in favor of York. Lemke had two kills during the burst. Up 15-14, Lemke went back to work, slamming home two straight passes before an error by IU-Northwest made it 18-14. Leading 21-17, Felmer got things going with a kill. A pair of miscues gave the Panthers a 24-18 lead before Weigel finished the frame with a kill.

The visitors led 20-16 before Pa Diaz found the court. An error and a kill from Weigel pulled the Panthers within one, forcing a time-out. Tied at 22-22, Lemke broke the tie with a kill. Up 24-23, Lemke finished the match with a thunderous kill.  

The Panthers return to action Tuesday when they play at Midland University at 7:30 p.m.
