YORK, Neb. – The York University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 1-0 match Saturday afternoon to Doane in the season-opening contest, which was played in front of the home crowd.
The Panthers are now 0-1 on the season while the Tigers improve to 2-0.
Samantha Bayer nearly put the home team on the board in the 17
th minute, but Doane's keeper managed to provide a save. Margot Bregat's attempt at the 41:07 mark missed wide as the match remained scoreless.
Early in the second half,
Harumi Cornejo came up huge, posting a pair of saves for the home team. With just over 22 minutes remaining, Cornejo stopped another attempt. The keeper thwarted three more shots in the next 13 minutes of action.
The Tigers broke through with a goal at the 83:52 mark for a 1-0 lead.
York was unable to get another shot in the match.
For the contest, Bayer, Bregat and
Lois Mattock posted shots for the Panthers. Bayer had the lone shot on goal for York.
Between the pipes,
Sofia Falcao got the start and had three saves. Cornejo had seven stops in the loss.
Doane held a 13-3 advantage in shots, including a 12-1 edge in shots on frame. York posted three corner kicks. Collectively, the keepers registered 10 saves.
The Panthers return to action Saturday, Aug. 30, when they square off against Mount Marty at 3 p.m.
