Women's Soccer: Panthers lose tough game at Mount Marty

YANKTON, S.D. – The York University women's soccer team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 contest at Mount Marty Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 0-2 on the season. Mount Marty stands at 2-1 in 2025.

The teams played to a scoreless draw until late in the second half. That's when the Panthers struck first. At the 81:31 mark, York took a 1-0 lead when the home team scored for the visitors via an own goal.

The home team tried to counter quickly, but Harumi Cornejo thwarted an attempt with just 7:24 left to play in the match. The Lancers earned a corner kick and promptly tied the contest at 1-1 at the 84:04 mark.

The Panthers pushed forward and earned their own corner kick as the clock said 85:50. Just after the corner kick, Lois Mattock's header sailed just high of the frame. With 3:21 to go, Sofia Villa Monterd's shot was saved, keeping the score at 1-1.

The Lancers took the lead with what turned out to be the match-winning goal with just 2:18 left to play in the match. York was unable to garner another shot the remainder of the contest.

For the match, each team posted 13 shots, including 10 on goal. York earned three corner kicks. Cornejo accounted for eight saves while playing all 90 minutes between the pipes.

Gracie Reynolds led the way for the Panthers with four shots, including two on target. Ellie Reynolds tallied three shots, including two on goal. Samantha Bayer placed both attempts on frame while Mattock had a shot in the loss.

The Panthers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Midland University for a 7:30 p.m., contest.
