MARSHALL, Mo. - The York University volleyball team lost a pair of matches on Friday, falling to Stephens College 3-0 before dropping a 3-1 contest to William Woods.
The Panthers are now 2-7 on the season.
Against Stephens College, head coach
Irick Gardner's team was led by
Isidora Pa Diaz Aguirre's team-best six kills. She hit .364 in the match and posted a pair of blocks.
Kaylee Weigel and
Brianna Lemke notched four kills apiece. Lemke registered a .333 attack percentage.
Kensey Clifton dished out 10 assists to go along with seven digs while
Valentina Jimenez garnered 15 digs.
Florencia Felmer added eight digs while
Ambar Ortiz accounted for seven digs.
In the first set,
Amber White recorded a block to make it 6-4.
Jassania Joseph and
Emma Kerley combined for a block before
Meadow Nusbaum served up an ace, knotting the score at 6-6.
Mackenzie Smith's ace pulled York within three at 12-9. Down 20-12, Lemke slammed home a kill and put up a block, pulling the team within six at 20-14.
Trailing 8-2 in the second stanza, an error sparked a run for the Panthers.
Emma Stapley had an ace before Joseph and Lemke combined for a block. An error by Stephens and a kill from Lemke made it 8-7. Down 13-7, Lemke started a 5-1 run with a kill. Joseph and Kerley had a block while Joseph also posted a solo stuff. With the score at 17-13, the designated visitors embarked on an 8-0 run for the set.
York tied the third set at 8-8 on a kill from Kerley. Moments later, Felmer posted back-to-back kills, tying the contest at 10-10. The visitors slowly pulled away for the 25-19 victory.
Against William Woods,
Liberty Baker and Felmer recorded eight kills apiece. Pa Diaz Aguirre and
Izabella Stehno slammed home five kills each while
Kory Anschutz had four kills.
Nusbaum dished out 18 assists while Clifton had 15. Jimenez led the defense with 20 digs while Felmer and
Ambar Ortiz had 15 and 10, respectively. At the net, Joseph had five total blocks, including three solo blocks. Pa Diaz Aguirre notched four block assists.
Down 18-12 in the second set, a service error provided the Panthers with a point. Stehno posted a kill off a pass from Clifton before an attack error made it 18-15. Trailing 22-16, Joseph found the court for a kill before Nusbaum served up an ace, but the designated visitors took a 2-0 lead with the 25-19 win.
With the score at 6-5 in the third stanza, a ball handling error knotted the game for York. Joseph blocked an attempt and another error by WWU pushed the margin to two, 8-6. Leading 8-7, Felmer tallied a kill. Two plays later, Felmer and Pa Diaz combined for a block before Felmer finished the run with a kill. The back-and-forth affair saw the visitors take a 22-20 lead before Pa Diaz stopped a run with a kill. A miscue tied the set at 22-22. Trailing 24-22, Stehno staved off match point with a kill. Felmer followed it up with a point before an error by WWU gave the Panthers a 25-24 advantage. Baker closed the door and secured the 26-24 win with a kill.
Trailing 9-6 in the fourth set, Felmer registered a kill before an attack error made it 9-8. WWU stretched the margin to 18-10 before pulling away for the 25-14 win.
The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they square off against Central Methodist at 2 p.m., and Missouri Valley College at 7 p.m.
