Volleyball: York loses both matches on Saturday in Missouri

MARSHALL, Mo. – The York University volleyball team lost a pair of matches Saturday by 3-0 scores to Central Methodist and Missouri Valley. 

The Panthers are now 2-9 on the season.

Against Central Methodist, set scores were 21-25, 17-25, 17-25.

Head coach Irick Gardner's team was led by the duo of Liberty Baker and Jassania Joseph. Each slammed home seven kills. Joseph recorded an impressive .700 attack percentage on 10 attempts. Kaylee Weigel chipped in six kills while Emma Kerley had three kills.

Kensey Clifton dished out 22 assists and had a pair of kills in the contest.

Defensively, Valentina Jimenez recorded seven digs while Clifton added six. At the net, Joseph stuffed three shots while Baker and Weigel added one solo block apiece.

In the first set, York trailed 10-6 before Baker recorded a block. Izabella Stehno slammed home a kill as did Baker, making it 10-9. Down 11-9, the Panthers went on a 5-0 spurt. Joseph started it with a kill before four consecutive errors by the designated visitors. During the spurt, Joseph added a solo block. Joseph added a kill moments later for a 16-13 edge. The Panthers continued to hold serve, extended the margin to 20-17 after a kill from Weigel, an ace from Florencia Felmer and an error by CMU. However, the visitors went on an 8-1 run to close out the set.

In a tightly contested second set, Kerley recorded a kill to make it 10-8. CMU went on a 5-0 run before a service error made it 15-9. The Panthers continued to battle, but CMU staved off a late rally for the eight-point victory.

Down 11-8 in the third set, Weigel powered home a kill. An error by CMU gave the Panthers another point while closing the gap to 11-10. The visitors went on an 8-1 run en route to the 25-17 win.

Against Missouri Valley College, set scores were 21-25, 21-25, 20-25.

Baker led the way for the Panthers, slamming home nine kills while hitting .300. Felmer and Joseph accounted for seven kills apiece while Weigel notched six kills.

Clifton posted 25 assists to go along with nine digs, narrowly missing a double-double.

Felmer and Ambar Ortiz registered eight digs each while Jimenez chipped in seven in the loss.

A 5-0 spurt by York propelled the visitors to a 6-3 lead. During the run, Joseph and Weigel hammered home kills off passes from Clifton. Felmer and Joseph tallied back-to-back kills for a 9-6 edge. A 10-0 run by the opposition gave MVC an 18-11 advantage. The Panthers pulled within two after a quick 3-0 run, but the home team secured the four-point win.

In the second frame, Joseph garnered back-to-back kills for an 8-3 lead. Tied at 10-10, Felmer started a 4-0 run that saw Isidora Pa Diaz Aguirre add a kill. The back-and-forth affair saw York snag a 17-15 lead after kills from Weigel and Baker. A 9-1 run by the home team made it 24-18.

Kerley's kill in the early going of the third set gave York an 8-3 margin. Amber White pulled the Panthers within one at 14-13, but MVC went on a 3-0 run and held on for the 25-20 victory.
