Men's Soccer: Panthers score two second-half goals to win on the road

YANKTON, S.D. – The York University men's soccer team posted a pair of second-half goals, taking down Mount Marty 2-1 Saturday evening.

The Panthers are now 2-0 on the year while the Lancers fall to 0-1.

York had a couple of opportunities early on, but Alex Hulme's shot sailed high and Sergio Bueno's attempt was saved at the 3:14 mark. Just 25 seconds later, Dominic Griffin's shot sailed wide of the frame after a corner kick.

The Lancers took a 1-0 lead at the 12:30 mark, but the Panthers battled back. Bueno led the offensive attack with a shot on goal less than a minute later. After a pair of shots on goal by the visitors, York nearly broke through late in the half, but Patricio Estrada's shot was also stopped, keeping it at 1-0 heading into the second stanza.

Early in the second half, Simao Mendes found the back of the net, knotting the contest at 1-1 at the 53:17 mark. The Panthers continued to push forward and netted the go-ahead goal in the 66th minute of action when Alex Hulme found Tim Schafer for the score.

After a flurry of attempts by York, Schafer placed another shot on target, this time in the 78th minute. However, the keeper managed to come up with the save. Franco Pablot had a pair of shots on goal late while Finlay Lee had another, but each time the home squad turned away the Panthers.

Mount Marty had two shots in the final five minutes of action, but each was thwarted by Jamie Watt, preserving the 2-1 win.

For the match, York blasted 21 shots compared to 16 by the home team. The Panthers placed 14 shots on goal to seven by the Lancers. York also earned six corner kicks.

Watt played all 90 minutes between the pipes and stopped five shots.

The Panthers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Midland University for a 5 p.m., contest.
