YORK, Neb. – The York University volleyball team picked up a pair of tremendous five-set wins on Saturday. The team knocked off Mount Marty and Haskell Indian Nations.
The Panthers are now 8-11 on the season.
Against Mount Marty, head coach Irick Gardner's team was led by
Brianna Lemke's outstanding 23 kills while hitting .340.
Isidora Pa Diaz Aguirre hammered home nine kills while
Kaylee Weigel chipped in seven.
Kensey Clifton dished out 36 assists while
Meadow Nusbaum contributed 13.
Defensively,
Valentina Jimenez garnered 15 digs while Clifton notched a double-double with 10.
Florencia Felmer chipped in 10 digs as well.
At the net,
Ronan Merriex had a tremendous day, blocking seven attempts. Pa Diaz Aguirre added four while Baker and Jasania Joseph had three each.
After dropping the two sets, York recorded back-to-back victories. In the third frame, Pa Diaz Aguirre slammed home a kill to make it 18-10. Up 21-15, Merriex and Baker combined for a block. Baker and Pa Diaz Aguirre registered kills for the 25-19 victory.
Tied at 15-15 in the fourth stanza, an error by the visitors and a kill from Lemke pushed the score to 17-15.
Florencia Felmer served up an ace for a three-point advantage. Pa Diaz Aguirre notched a kill before another miscue extended the ee to 20-15. After Joseph and Merriex combined for a block, Lemke's point forced the fifth set.
The back-and-forth frame saw the teams play to a 10-10 tie before Lemke gave the home team an advantage off a pass from Clifton. Lemke and Merriex blocked an attempt, forcing a time-out. After the break in action, Mount Marty committed an error for a 13-10 lead. Baker and Merriex teamed up for a block, pushing the margin to 14-10. Moments later, Merriex completed the reverse sweep with a thunderous kill.
Against Haskell Indian Nations, York dropped a thrilling first set, the Panthers got things going with wins of 25-12 and 25-11 in the next two stanzas. Leading 12-7, Lemke found the court for a point. An error by the visitors and back-to-back aces from
Ambar Ortiz made it 16-7. Holding a 22-12 lead, Pa Diaz Aguirre had a pair of kills in the 13-point win.
Elena Brown's ace propelled the Panthers to a 13-2 margin in the third frame and the home squad never looked back. Felmer's point gave the team the 14-point victory.
Haskell Indian Nations won the fourth set, setting up the fifth frame. Lemke started it off with a pair of kills before Brown's ace gave the team a three-point margin. Up 5-4, Lemke found the court and an error made it 7-4. Up 7-6, Weigel slammed home a pass from Nusbaum. A pair of errors by the visitors and a block from Pa Diaz Aguirre pushed the Panthers to a lead they would not relinquish. Clifton wrapped up the five-set thriller with the ace.
For the match, Lemke had 17 kills while Pa Diaz Aguirre added 10. Merriex had nine and Weigel contributed eight.
Clifton and Nusbaum dished out 26 and 25 assists, respectively. Clifton also served up five aces while Felmer had four.
Defensively, Jimenez accounted for 14 digs. Ortiz and Oliva Romero totaled 13 and 11, respectively.
