Women's Basketball: Shepherd's career-high 34 points not enough as Panthers fall to Warriors

YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team lost a 105-80 contest to Sterling Saturday afternoon.
 
 The Panthers are now 6-11 on the year, including 1-9 in KCAC action.
 
 Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was paced by Destiny Shepherd's career-high 34 points. She drilled 10 shots from the floor, including six from distance. Shepherd also buried eight-of-13 from the free throw line while snagging six boards. Alesia Rand had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while Alliyana Page had 12 points and nine rebounds.
 
 Zoe Brown added seven points. Lauren Hiltl and Sylvia Valentino had three points apiece. Yareli Gomez, Amaya Payne and Lauren Perez had two points each. Olivia Adams netted a free throw in the contest. Monique Contreras dished out six assists and registered two thefts.  
 
 Down 8-6 in the early going, Alliyana Page converted a three-point play for a one-point lead. Down 13-12, Zoe Brown canned a three-ball before Shepherd hit a free throw for a 16-13 edge. Trailing 22-16, Brown hit two free throws and Rand drilled a jumper, pulling the team within two, 22-20. 
 
 With 6:22 to play in the second stanza, Shepherd connected on a three-ball, pulling the Panthers within five, 33-28. After seven straight points by the visitors, Payne nailed a jumper, making it 40-30. Down 47-35, Adams hit a charity toss while Valentino nailed two. However, the visitors held a 50-39 lead at the break.
 
 York cut it to nine on Gomez's lay-up off a pass from Contreras, but Sterling scored the next seven points. Rand converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 5:33 to go in the frame, making it 63-49. The visitors outscored the Panthers 31-17 in the year quarter. 
 
 The Panthers played even with the visitors the remained of the way, but it was not enough.
 
 For the game, York hit 26-of-66 from the floor, including eight-of-28 from downtown. The team canned 20-of-35 from the foul line. The Panthers held a 45-39 edge on the glass, including an 18-10 margin on the offensive boards. York dished out 12 assists and scored 25 points off the bench.
