Men's Basketball: Panthers lose on road to Avila

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The York University men's basketball team dropped a 77-72 contest at Avila Wednesday evening.

The Panthers are now 5-14 on the season, including 3-10 in KCAC action.

Head coach Mitch McMullen's team was guided by Jadin Johnson's superb 32-point performance. Jaxon Kilmurry added 11 points while Dave Dalge totaled nine markers. Shaun Armstrong had eight points and Landon Miller posted seven.

Eli Nutting contributed five points and 13 rebounds in the game.

Johnson netted the first five points of the contest and York's first seven en route to a 7-3 lead. Up 10-8, Dalge and Armstrong connected on jumpers before Kilmurry drilled a three-ball for a 17-8 edge. Holding a 22-12 lead, Miller buried a three-ball off a pass from Johnson. Armstrong's deep shot fof a pass from Miller gave the Panthers a 28-15 advantage, marking their largest cushion of the game.

With the score at 32-31, Johnson hit two free throws and connected on another shot from distance, this time off a pass from Jomar Ezell, for a 37-31 lead. York took a 37-34 advantage into halftime.

Armstrong opened the second half with a three-ball, but Avila tied the game at 40-40. Down 47-41, Dalge and Johnson hit shots, bringing the visitors within two with 12:45 to play.

Avila held a 56-47 lead before Kilmurry made two charity tosses and Johnson made a lay-up, slicing the deficit to five, 56-51. Trailing 71-62, Johnson scored and Nutting found the bottom of the net off a shot from distance, bringing the team within four, 71-67. However, that was as close as the team could get. Johnson hit a tremendous four-point play with nine ticks on the clock, but the Panthers were unable to score again in the waning seconds.

For the game, York hit 26-of-63 from the floor, including 12-of-34 from distance. The team hit eight-of-10 from the charity stripe. McMullen's team grabbed 34 rebounds while dishing out 16 assists. The squad had 16 points off turnovers and 11 second-chance points.
