Men's Basketball: Nutting's first-half double-double not enough for Panthers to beat Braves

YORK, Neb. – The York University men's basketball team dropped an 88-76 decision to Ottawa Friday afternoon in a contest that was originally slated for Saturday.

The Panthers are now 5-15 on the season, including 3-11 in KCAC action.

Head coach Mitch McMullen's team was guided by Jadin Johnson's game-best 26 points. Eli Nutting totaled 15 points and 12 boards for a double-double. Jaxon Kilmurry and Shaun Armstrong had 11 and 10, respectively. Armstrong pulled down seven boards.

Landon Miller added six points while Dave Dalge totaled four. Jomar Ezell and Donn'Yae Ferguson netted two points apiece. Johnson distributed four assists.

Down 9-6, Ezell converted a lay-up. On the ensuing possession, Dalge found Nutting for a three-point shot, giving the squad an 11-9 edge. Another three-ball from Nutting, this time from Ezell, gave the home team a 14-10 advantage. Tied at 14-14, Miller nailed a three-ball and Nutting scored a lay-up for a five-point cushion. Johnson found Miller for another deep three, giving the team a 24-19 margin.

Up by two, Johnson nailed back-to-back shots from behind the arc for a 30-22 lead. Trailing 32-30, Johnson made two foul shots and Nutting made a bucket. Up by one, 34-33, Johnson buried a jumper for a three-point advantage at the break (36-33).

Dalge pushed the margin to five on a lay-up in the early going of the second half. Down by five, Armstrong made it 45-43 on a three-point basket. Ottawa took a 60-48 lead, but Johnson netted a lay-up. Moments later, Kilmurry's three-point bucket sliced the deficit to 10 once again, 65-55.

The visitors led 78-60 before Kilmurry started a run with a shot from deep. He added a lay-up. Johnson and Ferguson each had inside shots, slicing the deficit to nine, 78-69, with 3:03 remaining. However, that was as close as York could get the rest of the way.

For the game, York hit 28-of-64 from the field, including 12-of-34 from the three-point stripe. The squad hit eight-of-10 from the free throw line. McMullen's squad grabbed 35 rebounds, 11 of which were on the offensive glass. York scored 28 points in the paint and had eight second-chance points.

The Panthers return to action Wednesday when they host Bethany at 6 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
