MCPHERSON, Kan. – The York University women's basketball team's tremendous comeback attempt came up just short in the 82-77 loss at McPherson College Wednesday evening.
The Panthers are now 6-10 on the season, including 1-8 in KCAC action.
Head coach
Corinna Minjarez's team was led by
Alliyana Page's 19 points and 13 rebounds. She also had four steals.
Destiny Shepherd added 17 points while
Zoe Brown totaled 10 points and eight rebounds.
Olivia Adams had nine markers while
Alesia Rand chipped in seven.
Yareli Gomez posted six points and five boards while Lauren Hiltl added five points.
Monique Contreras and
Amaya Payne had two points apiece.
Down 10-3, Shepherd hit two free throws at the 6:44 mark. A jumper by Rand pulled the team within there at 10-7. Brown's three-ball made it 13-10. Trailing 21-11, Page netted the next four points. Hiltl canned two free throws while Gomez hit two in the final minute, making it 21-19.
With the score at 23-19, Page connected on a lay-up.
Lauren Perez found Brown for a deep three-ball, giving the Panthers a 24-23 edge with 7:20 to play. Trailing 32-26,
Sylvia Valentino found Adams for a jumper at the 3:35 mark. However, the Bulldogs led 39-28 at the break.
McPherson College held a 52-36 lead with 5:41 to play in the third before Shepherd made a lay-up. Gomez and Adams hit shots off passes from Shepherd, slicing the deficit to 10, 52-42. However, the Bulldogs embarked on a 13-0 spurt to close out the period.
Down 68-42, Adams netted five points and Brown made a lay-up. York trailed 77-57 with 3:08 to play. Page scored back-to-back lay-ups. After a free throw and another lay-up, Shepherd hit an inside shot, pulling the Panthers within 11 at 77-66 with 1:48 to go. Hiltl hit a three-ball just 21 seconds later. Shepherd's three points closed the gap to 77-72 at the 40-second mark.
Trailing 78-72,
Sylvia Valentino found Shepherd for a three-point bucket with 31 ticks remaining. However, the valiant effort came up just short.
For the game, York hit 29-of-76 from the floor. The team buried five shots from deep and canned 14-of-21 from the foul line. The Panthers held a 52-40 edge on the glass. The visitors had 13 steals and scored 44 points in the paint.
