Softball: York splits day one at KC NAIA Invite

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The York University softball team split a pair of games on Saturday, knocking off Baker 4-3 before dropping the nightcap to Park 15-2.

The Panthers are now 1-5 on the season.

Against Baker, York trailed 3-0 through the first two innings. However, the Panthers got on the board in the third frame. Kailyn Ruckman drew a lead-off walk and moved to second when Caitlyn Dannenfelzer reached on a fielder's choice. Shannon Nelson's base hit up the middle loaded the bags. Two batters later, Ruckman raced home on a wild pitch, making it 3-1.

Chloe Lockhart reached on a fielder's choice in the fourth and hustled to second on a wild pitch. Moriah Hoshowski's base knock put runners on first and third. Morgan Cameron entered as a pinch runner and promptly swiped home on a double steal, cutting the margin to one.

York saw Nelson reach in the fifth on a throwing error. After taking second on a sacrifice bunt, Bethany Wright singled, pushing Nelson to third. Emma Peeples' groundout allowed Nelson to race home. Moments later, Lexi Knapp singled to right field, pushing Wright home for the game-winning run.

Lockhart shut down the designated visitors in the final two innings, allowing just one hit. She had 10 strikeouts for the game. Lockhart gave up three runs, but only one was earned.

For the game, Nelson, Wright, Jones, Knapp, Lockhart and Hoshowski had hits. Lockhart's double was the team's lone extra-base hit in the win.

Against Park, the designated home team took a 4-0 lead. In the second inning, M. Brownson led off with a single. Two batters later, she took second on Cameron's base knock through the right side. Dannenfelzer's groundout allowed both runners to move up 60 feet. Nelson singled in Brownson before Cameron scored when Nelson stole second.

Park plated five runs in the second for a 9-2 advantage. Park tacked on four runs in the third and two in the fourth.

For the game, Nelson led the way with two hits and one RBI. Brownson, Cameron and Knapp all had hits while Brown and Cameron each crossed home plate.
