YORK, Neb. – The York University men's basketball team lost an 86-69 contest to Avila Wednesday evening on Senior Night.
The Panthers are now 2-25 on the season, including 2-19 in KCAC action.
Head coach
Mitch McMullen's team was guided by
Jadin Johnson's 20-point effort.
Dave Dalge and
Logan Beckstrom added 13 points apiece. Beckstrom dished out two assists. Dalge and Beckstrom snagged four boards apiece.
Eli Nutting narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. He added three assists.
Jaxon Kilmurry added four points while
Jomar Ezell totaled three markers.
Shaun Armstrong accounted for three points.
Terrence Packer posted two points while
Donn'Yae Ferguson had one.
A three-point bucket from Johnson, a lay-up from Dalge and a tip-in from Beckstrom gave York a 14-8 lead at the 13:56 mark. Down 17-16, Nutting got on the board with an inside shot at the 10:29 mark. Facing a 24-21 deficit, Beckstrom found Johnson for a three-point field goal. Kilmurry made a lay-up before Beckstrom nailed a shot from distance for a 29-24 advantage.
Facing a 33-29 deficit, Dalge rattled off four straight points, knotting the score with 2:08 to play in the half. Avila nailed a shot for a 35-33 lead at the break.
Down 43-38, Dalge connected on a free throw. Nutting hit Ezell for a three-point bucket, pulling the Panthers within one, 43-42, at the 16:25 mark. The visitors led 54-45 before Armstrong canned a three-point bucket with 12:43 to play.
Johnson's shot from distance sliced the deficit to nine, 65-56, at the 8:27 mark. Nutting converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 7:43 to play, making it 67-59. The teams traded points and Ferguson's free throw once again made it an eight-point game, 71-63, with 5:26 remaining. However, that was as close as the team would get the rest of the way.
For the game, York hit 23-of-59 from the floor, including nine-of-29 from downtown. The squad buried 14-of-18 from the charity stripe. The Panthers grabbed 26 rebounds and dished out seven assists. York recorded 30 points off the bench and scored 13 points off turnovers.
