Women's Basketball: York rallies late, but can't pull out win at Kansas Wesleyan

SALINA, Kan. – The York University women's basketball team dropped a 77-66 contest at Kansas Wesleyan Wednesday evening.
 
The Panthers are now 7-17 overall, including 2-15 in KCAC action.
 
Head coach Corinna Minjarez's squad was guided by Destiny Shepherd's 28-point performance. Zoe Brown added 14 points while Monique Contreras chipped in 10 points and four steals. Alliyana Page totaled seven points while Amaya Payne had seven points while Yareli Gomez posted two markers. Olivia Adams grabbed eight boards in the loss. 
 
York trailed 34-15 at the end of the first quarter, but the team battled back. The Coyotes managed to outscore the Panthers 12-9 in the second quarter. Down 40-17, Shepherd canned a jumper at the 4:40 mark. Shepherd continued her solid start, but Brown got in to the action with a basket with just under a minute to play in the half. Payne connected on a free throw, making it 46-24 at the break.
 
The visitors outscored KWU 28-19 in the third frame. The Panthers started the quarter with a three-point basket from Brown off a pass from Adams. Shepherd hit two free throws before finding the bottom of the net on a jumper at the 8:17 mark. Another 6-0 spurt a moment later sliced the deficit to 11, 48-37. Down 54-41, Brown hit a three-point bucket. Contreras added two charity tosses, making it 54-46, at the 3:52 mark. However, KWU took a 65-52 lead into the fourth quarter. 
 
York continued to battle, making it 69-59 when Contreras found Shepherd for a dep three-ball at the 7:30 mark. Shepherd hit another shot from distance before Gomez connected on a jumper, making it 71-64 with 5:04 to play. KWU closed the game on a 6-2 run for the final tally.
 
For the game, York buried 26-of-61 from the floor. The team hit five shots from downtown and connected on nine-of-10 from the charity stripe. Minjarez's team pulled down 26 boards. The Panthers dished out eight assists, had nine steals and netted 34 points in the paint. York accounted for seven second-chance points.
