Softball: Panthers get split with Spires in home opener

YORK, Neb. – The York University softball team split a doubleheader against Saint Mary on Tuesday, winning 5-4 in eight innings before falling 3-0 in the nightcap. 

The Panthers are now 6-14 overall, including 1-1 in KCAC action.
 
Shannon Nelson opened the bottom of the first with a bunt and reached on an error. After stealing second, she scored on Taylor Larson's double down the left field line. Two batters later, Lexi Knapp doubled home Larson for a 2-0 lead.
 
Tied at 2-2 in the fourth, Knapp singled up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Bethany Wright singled home Moriah Hoshowski, who entered as a pinch runner for Knapp. 
 
Saint Mary tied it in the fifth and the score remained at 3-3 until the eighth. Trailing 4-3 in the bottom of the final inning, Larson singled, putting runners on first and third due to the international tiebreaker. Larson stole second and Taylor Jones rocketed a double down the right field line, scoring Emma Peeples and Larson for the walk-off win.
 
For the game, Nelson, Larson, Knapp and Wright had two hits apiece. Jones drove in two while Larson scored twice. 
 
In the circle, Knapp got the start and worked six innings and had a strikeout. Ashley Falk worked the final two innings and got the win. 
 
Game two saw the visitors plate a run in the second, fifth and six frames for their three runs. 
 
A great opportunity for York occurred in the second inning. With two down, Megan Brownson and Morgan Cameron each singled up the middle. However, a strikeout ended the threat.
 
The Panthers saw Brooklyn Hadl single to right field in the seventh, but a fly ball concluded the contest.
 
For the game, Brownson, Cameron and Hadl had hits while Larson drew a walk.
 
In the circle, Larson had six strikeouts in the complete-game effort. She gave up three runs on five hits. Only one run was earned.
