Softball: Broncos sweep Panthers in midweek doubleheader

HASTINGS, Neb. – The York University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Hastings Thursday by scores of 9-1 and 2-1 in a pair of non-conference contests.

The Panthers are now 6-16 on the season while the Broncos stand at 9-8.

Head coach Aaron Alvarez's team saw Shannon Nelson reach on an error in the first inning. She took third on a sacrifice bunt by Brooklyn Hadl. Nelson crossed home on Taylor Larson's groundout, giving York a 1-0 lead.

Hastings posted three runs in the first, three in the second, one in the third, fourth and fifth for the 9-0 win.

The Panthers only had two other base runners – Nelson via a walk and Sydney Rann via a base on balls.

In the circle, Alex Harwell worked 1.2 innings while Ashley Falk tossed three frames. Falk had a pair of strikeouts.

Game two saw the Panthers break the scoreless tie in the top of the fourth. With two down, Kailyn Ruckman launched a pitch into center field for a ground-rule double on an 0-1 count. Megan Brownson ripped a single to right field on the ensuing pitch for a 1-0 lead.

Hastings responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth for a one-run advantage.

For the game, Hadl led the way with two hits, including a double. Ruckman also doubled. Brown drove in Ruckman in the contest. Jones and Caitlyn Dannenfelzer each had hits.

In the circle, Kory Anschutz tossed a complete game and had a strikeout. She gave up two runs, but only one was earned, on five hits and three walks.

The Panthers return to action Saturday at Southwestern College for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpathers.com.
