Softball: York picks up sweep at Southwestern

WINFIELD, Kan. - The York University softball team recorded a pair of victories at Southwestern on Saturday by scores of 8-0 and 10-7. 
 
The Panthers are now 8-16 overall, including 3-1 in KCAC action. 
 
Head coach Aaron Alvarez's team jumped on top with a run in the first. With two down, Taylor Larson walked and stole second. Taylor Jones doubled her home for the early advantage.
 
In the third, Shannon Nelson doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Larson. 
 
York broke open the game in the fifth. Megan Brownson singled and Brooklyn Hadl recorded a one-out base knock to put two on. Larson tripled in both teammates. Jones promptly singled home Larson for a 5-0 lead. The Panthers tacked on a run in the sixth when Nelson drove in Kailyn Ruckman, who had tripled.  
 
Hadl tripled to lead off the seventh and scored on a base knock from Taylor Jones. Bethany Wright drove in Jones for the 8-0 victory.
 
For the game, Jones led the way with three hits and three RBI. Hadl, Nelson and Wright had two hits apiece. Larson drove in three and scored twice. Hadl also crossed home twice.
 
In the circle, Larson tossed a complete-game shutout and had two strikeouts. 
 
Game two saw Nelson and Hadl each single in the first. Two batters later, Jones doubled home both for a 2-0 lead. 
 
Kailyn Ruckman tripled with one down in the second and scored on Morgan Cameron's groundout. 
 
Leading 3-2 in the fourth, Emma Peeples roped a lead-off triple and scored on Bethany Wright's bunt single. Tied at 4-4 in the fifth, Larson walked and swiped second. After moving to third on a groundout, Caitlyn Dannenfelzer's single pushed Larson home. 
 
Trailing 6-5 in the sixth, Ruckman singled, stole second and hustled to third on Cameron's bunt single. Nelson's sacrifice fly allowed Ruckman to cross home. With runners on first and third, Cameron stole home and Hadl swiped second. Larson doubled home Hadl and after a pitching change, Jones belted a two-run blast for a 10-6 margin.
 
Southwestern scored a run in the sixth, but York shut the door for the win.  
 
For the game, Hadl and Ruckman had three hits apiece. Jones recorded two hits and four RBI while Larson added a pair of hits and two runs scored. Hadl and Ruckman also crossed home twice each.
 
In the circle, Ashley Falk got the start and tossed 3.2 innings with three strikeouts. Kory Anschutz recorded the win with 2.1 innings of work and a strikeout. Larson threw the seventh and notched a strikeout for the save.  
 
The Panthers return to action Wednesday when they play at No. 17 Evangel for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpathers.com.
