Softball: Panthers drop two to Eagles on hot afternoon

YORK, Neb. – The York University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Oklahoma Wesleyan Saturday afternoon by scores of 11-6 and 13-8.  
 
The Panthers are now 8-20 on the season, including 3-5 in KCAC action. 
 
Head coach Aaron Alvarez's squad jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Shannon Nelson led off the inning with a single to left center field and moved to second on Brooklyn Hadl's sacrifice bunt. An error allowed Nelson to score and Hadl reached safely. Bethany Wright's base hit pushed across Hadl for a 2-0 lead.
 
Oklahoma Wesleyan took a 3-2 lead in the third, but York knotted the score in the bottom of the inning. Nelson walked and swiped second. She scored on Hadl's double to left field. 
 
The visitors pushed across a run in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth for an 8-3 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Kailyn Ruckman doubled to center field and scored on Megan Brownson's single. 
 
Down 11-4, Wright singled in Nelson and Hadl crossed home on Taylor Larson's groundout. However, the Panthers could get no closer.   
 
For the game, Nelson and Wright each had two hits. Wright drove in two while Nelson scored three times. Hadl crossed home twice. 
 
In the circle, Lexi Knapp struck two out in 2.2 innings. Larson tossed 3.1 innings while Madison Sayer worked the seventh. 
 
Game two saw Oklahoma Wesleyan take a 4-0 lead heading to the bottom of the fifth. Knapp started things off with a single to center field. Moriah Hoshowski entered as a pinch runner. After moving to second on a passed ball, Emma Peeples rocketed a triple to right field, making it 4-1. Caitlyn Dannenfelzer's single to left field knocked in Peeples, slicing the deficit to 4-2. 
 
Down 10-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Panthers quickly responded. Hadl singled on the first pitch she saw and scored on an error as Wright recorded a base hit. Taylor Jones poked a pitch into right field and the home team put runners in scoring position on an error. Knapp doubled home Wright and Jones, making it 10-5. Larson drew a walk and Ruckman doubled home Sayer, who entered as a pinch runner, and Larson. 
 
Trailing 13-7 in the seventh, Hadl crushed the first pitch she saw for a solo home run. 
 
For the game, Hadl, Knapp and Peeples had two hits apiece. Knapp and Ruckman had two RBI each while Hadl scored twice. 
 
In the circle, Ashley Falk got the start and tossed five innings. She had two strikeouts. Alex Harwell threw two-thirds of an inning with a strikeout while Kory Anschutz threw the final 1.1 frames.
