STERLING, Kan. – The York University softball team split a doubleheader at Sterling on Wednesday, falling 1-0 in the opener before posting a 9-6 victory in the nightcap.
The Panthers are now 15-27 on the season, including 10-12 in KCAC action.
Head coach
Aaron Alvarez's squad had a chance to get on the board in the second inning.
Taylor Jones recorded a lead-off single and promptly swiped second base. With one down, she moved to third on
Bethany Wright's sacrifice bunt. However, a fly ball ended the inning.
In the third frame,
Moriah Hoshowski posted a single and stole second base, but a strikeout ended the threat.
Sterling pushed across a run in the bottom of the third for a 1-0 lead. York had a tremendous opportunity in the seventh stanza. With two down, Wright singled and
Sydney Rann entered as a pinch runner.
Emma Peeples singled, putting two on base but the team was unable to score the tying run.
For the game, Hoshowski recorded two hits.
Taylor Larson, Jones, Peeples and Wright notched hits in the contest.
In the circle,
Lexi Knapp went the distance and had three strikeouts. She allowed one run on seven hits.
Game two saw the Panthers take a quick 1-0 lead.
Brooklyn Hadl singled to left field and went to third on Hoshowski's bunt – along with a miscue on the shortstop. Hadl scored on Larson's fielder's choice.
Tied at 1-1 in the second,
Morgan Cameron reached on a fielder's choice. After taking second on a passed ball and third when
Shannon Nelson reached on an error, Hadl's base hit drove in Cameron. Hoshowski recorded a base knock that drove in Nelson and Hadl scored on an error for a 4-1 lead.
With the score knotted at 4-4 in the fourth, Hadl registered a one-out triple to center field. Moments later, Jones's base hit drove in Hadl. However, the Warriors plated two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 6-5 advantage.
In the sixth, Hadl led off with a base knock. She moved to second on Hoshowski's bunt single. Jones ripped a triple to right field two pitches later, propelling York to a 7-6 lead. Two batters later, Peeples blasted a shot up the middle, driving in Jones for a two-run margin, 8-6. The Panthers pushed the edge to three in the seventh. Hoshowski garnered a two-out double to right center field and scored on Larson's base hit.
For the game, Hadl and Hoshowski each had four hits. Jones added two. Jones and Larson drove in three runs while Hadl and Hoshowski scored four times and twice, respectively.
In the circle,
Ashley Falk went the distance for the win. She gave up six runs, but only two were earned, on 10 hits. The standout recorded the win in 80 pitches.
