The Lady Panthers scored 41 first half points on their way to a conference win Friday night. York used a powerful offense behind Cory Minjarez and a stellar defense to build a 17 point lead going into halftime. Minjarez and Courtney Swope led all scorers with 17 points followed by Doreen Lopez's 14.
Coach Matt Madole was very pleased with his team's performance. After the game he commented "I thought our defense really set the tone in the first half by only giving up 24 points after 20 minutes. We moved the ball well and scored inside and outside which is something we really try to do. We feel if we don't have one we can rely on the other and tonight both were clicking. We got sloppy down the stretch being up 31 with just under 7 minutes left to play; and only winning by 12 isn't good. But we had a lot of young ones in and they need that time to learn how to close games down the stretch."
York never trailed on the night and the final was much closer than the game really showed. Coach Madole definitely worked on driving to the hoop and setting screens off the ball to get the easy buckets. That game plan offensively and a high pressure press early in the game allowed the Panthers to relax a little bit and rest going into a big matchup tomorrow against College of the Ozarks, a team ranked 15th in the country. The Panthers improved to 9-10 on the season and 4-4 in conference play.
Tomorrow's game is set for a 3:00pm tip-off.
