Wichita, KAN. - York College shot a favorable 43% from the field on Monday night but was unable to overcome the 31 turnovers, falling 79-62 to the Friends Falcons.
The Panthers jumped out early on the host Falcons leading by seven points just four minutes into the game as Melody Thomsen (JR/Westminster, Calif) made two free throws for the 7-0 lead. The Falcons battled back and took the lead with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter, but Amaia Diez (FR/Pamplona, Spain) hit a long-range three-pointer to lead 20-18 at the end of the first.
Friends controlled the next three quarters outscoring the Panthers by 19 points. After the Falcons scored nine points off of eight Panthers turnovers in the first quarter they scored 24 points on 23 turnovers over the final three frames.
York's defense was strong all night allowing just 36% shooting from Friends University. The Panthers also outrebounded the Falcons 45-35. But the turnovers were the difference, allowing the Falcons to attempt 18 more field goal attempts and had a 28-11 free throw advantage.
Amaia Diez led the Panthers with 14 points. Melody Thomsen was right behind with 12 points, followed by Ciara Williams (SR/San Diego, Calif) with 10 points and seven rebounds.
York will travel to Leavenworth, Kansas on Thursday for a matchup against the University of St. Mary.
