Panthers survive late rally to beat Avila on the road

Kansas City, MO - York led by as many as 25 points during the contest but it came down to the final seconds for them as they survived with a 57-54 win at Avila. The Eagles brought the game within one point at 53-52 with just under two minutes remaining. Deja Derrell (SR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) pushed the lead back up to three points and then the Panthers secured the victory with two late free throws.

The Panthers jumped ahead quickly and left the Eagles awestruck as the Panthers built a 15-0 lead in the first five minutes of play. York led 18-3 at the end of the period and continued the same in the second period going on a 7-0 run to lead 25-5 with just under seven minutes to play in the half. The Panthers were up 18 points at the break leading 36-18.

The second half was very similar to the first during the first four minutes as another 9-2 run had the Panthers leading 45-20. However, the Panthers offense stalled over the final 16 minutes as York only scored 12 points the rest of the way. The Eagles went on a 15-3 run to end the quarter. They scored the first 11 points of the fourth that extended their run to 26-3 over the 11-minute span. Yionis Keith (SO/Oklahoma City, Okla) stopped the bleeding when she made a three-pointer with 5:11 remaining in the game. The final five minutes were back-and-forth as the Panthers wouldn't allow the Eagles to gain the lead.

Julia Trujillo (SR/Denver, Colo) led the Panthers with 15 points and seven rebounds. Deja Derrell added 14 points, while Yionis Keith had a full line with 10 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and seven steals.

The Panthers move to 4-6 on the season and face Tabor College on Monday. The game is slated for a 5:00 p.m. tip.
