Box Score YORK - York University beat the College of St. Mary Flames 64-47 thanks to a strong performance by Kiara Pesina and Megan Mares-Torres. Pesina was solid from the charity stripe as she converted 9-of-10 to help her lead the Panthers with 19 points. Mares-Torres came off of the bench to pick up the double-double scoring 15 points and adding 14 rebounds.
After a slow start, the Panthers' offense started to pick up midway through the first period. After the Flames made a layup up with under four seconds to play Natalia Perez put up a long three-point attempt as time expired and made it to give York the 19-16 advantage.
York's defense stepped up in the second period and held the Flames to just 20% shooting. York opened up the quarter going on a 7-0 run and not allowing the Flames to score a field goal until the 4:23 mark of the period. York extended their lead to 15 points in the third period. In the final frame the Flames attempted to make a comeback but the Panthers' defense was too strong.
York outrebounded the Flames 47-33. Mares-Torres was a big help in that as she picked up eight offensive boards. That allowed the Panthers to have a plus-seven advantage in second chance points. The Flames also struggled from the line as they converted just 40% of their attempts.
The Panthers did escape with the victory even with committing 24 turnovers. York also was also able to score double-digits in each period while holding the Flames to two periods of single-digit scoring.
York will have several days off before starting KCAC play with a road trip to Ottawa University on Wednesday, November 16.
