Esports finishes year with solid performances

The 2023/24 school year was a remarkable one for York University's esports team, marked by significant achievements and outstanding performances across multiple games.

The Rocket League team had an impressive run, finishing 3rd in the NECC Navigators Nationals. The team, consisting of Andrew Bond, Harry Yunevich, and Jeffrey Quintero, showcased exceptional skill and teamwork throughout the season. They qualified for nationals after securing 2nd place in their division in the fall season. The team faced a tough battle in the semifinals against Ithaca University, ultimately losing in a close 4-3 set. Ithaca would go on to win the championship title, making York's close match with them even more commendable.

The Overwatch team also had a strong season, finishing 3rd in the KCAC conference. The roster included Andrew Bond, Harry Yunevich, Kinley Collins, Bryson Adams, and Sal Fernandez. Despite a hard-fought effort, they fell short in a narrow 3-2 loss to Kansas Wesleyan University. The team displayed remarkable coordination and resilience throughout their matches.

This season is particularly notable as we say goodbye to two foundational members of our program, Andrew Bond and Sal Fernandez. Both have been integral to our esports program since its inception in Fall 2021. Bond has been a dynamic leader, serving as the captain of both the Rocket League and Overwatch teams. His versatility extended to competing in Super Smash Bros: Ultimate, showcasing his broad gaming talents. Bond's leadership and dedication have significantly contributed to the growth and success of our esports program.

Sal Fernandez has been a cornerstone of our team as a consistent support player over the past three years. His dedication extended beyond esports; Sal was also a key player on the varsity basketball team for the last three seasons. His commitment and teamwork have left a lasting impact on our program and his teammates.

Looking ahead, we are excited to announce that we are expanding our Super Smash Bros: Ultimate and League of Legends rosters. Additionally, we are thrilled to welcome two Overwatch State Champs to our team. We will miss our graduates, but we are excited about all the talent returning and joining us this fall.

As we reflect on this successful season, we are filled with pride and gratitude for our players' hard work and achievements. Their efforts have set a high standard for future teams and have established York University's esports program as a formidable competitor in collegiate esports.

We wish Andrew and Sal the best of luck in their future endeavors and are confident they will achieve great things. The entire team is rooting for you every step of the way!
