YORK, Neb. — York University Esports completed a historic fall semester highlighted by championships, national qualifications, and continued growth across multiple competitive titles.
Overwatch 2: Championships and National Momentum
The Overwatch 2 team delivered one of the most successful seasons in program history during fall competition. Competing in NECC Central Division 8, the Panthers put together a record-breaking regular season, earning a top-four finish and advancing to the playoffs. Once postseason play began, York elevated its performance, winning three consecutive playoff matches to claim the division championship.
The title-clinching victory came in dominant fashion, as York defeated the University of North Dakota, previously undefeated entering the postseason, by a decisive 4–0 margin. The championship marked the first regular-season title for York's Overwatch 2 program and secured an automatic bid to nationals this spring.
The starting lineup that powered York's championship run included:
Key depth and support were provided by substitutes
Reese Leonard and
Tanner Lebs, whose contributions helped sustain consistency throughout the season.
York's Overwatch 2 success extended into ECAC Division C competition. After a challenging regular season that saw the Panthers narrowly qualify for the playoffs, the team demonstrated tremendous growth and cohesion in the postseason. York upset the top seed in the second round and followed it with a statement semifinal victory, earning a spot in the ECAC championship match and guaranteeing a top-two conference finish. The championship match will be played remotely on December 18. A win would represent the first time in program history that a York esports team captured titles in two different conferences during the same season.
Throughout the fall, York's Overwatch 2 team earned wins over several notable opponents, including:
- University of Kentucky
- University of Delaware
- North Dakota State University
- University of North Dakota
- Missouri State
- Oklahoma Baptist University
- Saint Francis University
- SUNY Cobleskill
- Trine University
The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (SSBU) team also enjoyed a strong fall semester, competing at the highest level in ECAC Division E. After a rebuilding season last year, the Panthers made a major leap forward, comfortably qualifying for the playoffs and finishing fourth in the division.
York's SSBU roster featured:
The team's postseason run ended in a hard-fought semifinal matchup, but the progress made throughout the semester reflected the team's growth, preparation, and competitive maturity.
Overall, the fall semester stands as a record-breaking chapter for the esports program. The program has now competed at the national level eight times, with a ninth appearance already secured and additional national opportunities still possible. With championships, marquee wins, and continued development across titles, York Esports continues to establish itself among the top collegiate esports programs in the nation.
The momentum built this fall sets the stage for an exciting spring season as the Panthers look to build on their success and continue competing with, and defeating, some of the best teams in the country.
