Warriors pull away in second half against Panthers

STERLING, Kan. – The York University women's basketball team dropped a 91-58 contest at Sterling Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 4-9 overall, including 2-8 in KCAC action.

Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was paced by Ashley Rubio's 16-point performance. Rubio drained all seven field goals she attempted. Additionally, Rubio added eight boards, four assists, three steals and a pair of blocks.

Destiny Shepherd tallied 12 points, four steals and four assists.

Olivia Shannon hit four-of-seven for nine points while Britney Schroer totaled seven points and five rebounds. Monique Contreras accounted for six points and Alliyana Page netted four markers. Pasiko Hvichiani and Kiera Parks totaled two points apiece.

Rubio netted the team's first five points of the game. Down 11-5, Contreras found Shannon for a three-point bucket. Rubio's lay-up off a pass from Shepherd made it 13-10 at the 5:34 mark. Shannon and Contreras each hit shots, pulling York within five on a pair of occasions. Moments later, Clara Romero hit Shepherd for a long-distance jumper, making it 23-19 with 48 seconds to go in the first quarter.

Trailing 27-19, Contreras converted a lay-up off a pass from Shepherd at the 8:29 mark. Down by 12, Rubio and Shannon hit shots prior to Rubio hitting a lay-up, making it 33-26 with 2:32 to play in the frame. The Panthers embarked on another run just before the break. With the score at 35-26, Shepherd canned a charity toss. Contreras and Hvichiani buried inside shots. A pair of free throws by Schroer with 32 ticks remaining sliced the deficit to just two, 35-33. The teams entered halftime with the score at 37-33.

The teams traded the first four points of the third frame before Sterling went on a 10-2 spurt to break open the contest. The Panthers could not get any closer the rest of the way.

For the game, York hit 23-of-45 from the floor, including four-of-16 from the three-point line. The Panthers outrebounded the home team 28-26. Minjarez's squad dished out 18 assists and registered 14 steals. The visitors scored 16 points off turnovers and totaled 28 points in the paint.
