Hvichiani finds Schroer for game-winning layup

YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team won a thriller over Saint Mary 66-64 Wednesday evening.

The Panthers are now 5-9 overall, including 3-8 in league play.

Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was led by Destiny Shepherd's 16 points. Ashley Rubio added 11 points while Britney Schroer totaled 10 points, eight boards and five assists. Pasiko Hvichiani chipped in 10 points while Alliyana Page and Alyssa Civitak had nine and eight, respectively. Olivia Adams contributed two points, six boards and four assists.

Trailing 37-31 at the break, York found itself down by eight before Schroer buried a jumper. Rubio's two free throws at the 8:07 mark made it a four-point contest. Shepherd got the steal and a lay-up before converting a foul shot for an old-fashioned three-point play at the 7:17 mark.

The Panthers tied it when Shepherd had a steal and lay-up with 6:22 to play, but the visitors took a two-point lead. The back-and-forth affair saw Schroer find Page for a jumper in the lane with 2:35 to go in the third quarter to knot it at 46-46. However, Saint Mary took a two-point lead going into the fourth quarter.

York trailed 49-48 before Schroer hit Rubio for a jumper with 9:09 to go. The foul shot pushed the margin to two, 51-49. Rubio continued her solid night, drilling back-to-back jumpers for a six-point margin at the 7:41 mark.

Schroer extended the lead to eight, 57-49, 49 seconds later. However, Saint Mary went on a run and took a 61-60 lead on a three-ball at the 3:06 mark.

Shepherd netted four straight points, but a long-distance bucket by the visitors knotted it at 64-64 with 60 seconds to play.

Both teams committed turnovers in the final minute and with 11 ticks on the clock, York took a time-out. After the break, Hvichiani found Schroer for a shot in the lane for the game-winning bucket.

For the game, York hit 25-of-60 from the floor, including four-of-11 from the three-point line. The team drained 12 charity tosses and pulled down 36 boards. The squad dished out 16 assists, had 13 steals and notched three blocks in the win.

The Panthers return to action Saturday, Jan. 18, when they play at Oklahoma Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
