YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team cruised to a 76-56 victory over Avila Wednesday evening.
The Panthers are now 6-10 overall, including 4-9 in KCAC action.
Head coach
Corinna Minjarez's team was paced by
Destiny Shepherd's 32-point performance. She drained 12-of-19 from the floor, including five-of-nine from downtown. Shepherd also snagged four rebounds, had a block and an assist in 35 minutes of work.
Monique Contreras added 14 points while
Britney Schroer totaled nine points and 10 rebounds.
Olivia Adams,
Ashley Rubio and
Pasiko Hvichiani added five points apiece.
Hvichiani's lay-up and Rubio's jumper gave the Panthers a 6-3 edge just 1:20 into the game. Trailing 13-10, Adams found Shepherd for a three-point bucket. A pair of charity tosses by Shepherd made it 15-13.
Down 19-15, Contreras converted a lay-up. Two free throws by
Clara Romero knotted the score at 19-19 with 2:09 to play in the first frame. Tied at 2-1-21, Shepherd converted an old-fashioned three-point play for a 24-21 edge going into the second stanza.
Holding a 29-25 lead, Shepherd went on a roll. She hit a pair of lay-ups before drilling a three-point bucket at the 4:33 mark for a 36-25 advantage. York would maintain a 39-30 margin entering the third quarter.
A free throw by Rubio early in the third quarter extended the margin to 10, 42-32. Up 47-38,
Britney Schroer found Hvichiani for a three-point basket.
Alyssa Civitak found Schroer for a field goal, giving the home team a 52-38 lead. An 8-3 spurt by York in the waning moments propelled the Panthers to a 60-41 lead going into the final frame.
Avila pulled within 16, but York quickly countered. Shepherd netted five consecutive points before Adams and Romero canned field goals for a 76-51 lead.
For the game, York canned 29-of-59 from the floor, including a sizzling eight-of-20 from the three-point stripe. The Panthers made 10-of-18 from the charity stripe. Minjarez's team outrebounded the visitors 47-35. York dished out 18 assists and scored 38 points in the paint in the win.
