LINDSBORG, Kan. – The York University women's basketball team dropped an 83-51 contest at Bethany Wednesday evening.
The Panthers are now 6-12 on the season, including 4-11 on the year. The Swedes stand at 10-11 overall and 8-7 in KCAC action.
Head coach
Corinna Minjarez's team was led by
Destiny Shepherd's 13 points and three steals.
Ashley Rubio accounted for 11 points and four blocks.
Pasiko Hvichiani and
Britney Schroer scored seven points apiece.
Olivia Adams and
Clara Romero notched four points each.
Down 8-0, Schroer got things going with a pair of jumpers. Shepherd and Hvichiani recorded back-to-back lay-ups, tying the game at 8-8 at the 6:01 mark. Trailing 21-13, Hvichiani nailed a three-ball, making it a five-point game with 1:40 on the clock in the opening quarter. Bethany embarked on a 7-0 spurt for a 28-16 edge entering the second stanza.
The Panthers' Adams scored the first four points of the frame, pulling the visitors within eight, 28-20. With the score at 36-23, Shepherd and Romero made lay-ups, slicing the deficit to nine. With just 21 seconds on the clock before halftime, Shepherd was fouled and calmly buried both free throws, making it 44-30 at the break.
Rubio hit back-to-back field goals in the third stanza, pulling the team within 10. With 6:43 to play, Rubio took a pass from Hvichiani and buried a jumper to make it 50-37. However, the Swedes embarked on an 11-4 spurt to end the quarter.
York was unable to cut the deficit to single digits the rest of the way.
For the game, York hit 20-of-58 from the floor. The team hit two three-point buckets and made nine-of-13 from the charity stripe. The squad dished out 10 assists and netted 26 points in the paint.
