MCPHERSON, Kan. – The York University women's basketball team picked up a hard-fought 65-56 victory at McPherson College Tuesday evening.
The Panthers are now 8-14 on the season, including 6-13 in KCAC action.
Head coach
Corinna Minjarez's team was led by
Destiny Shepherd's 25-point effort. She drained seven-of-13 from the floor, including five-of-seven from downtown. Additionally, Shepherd hit six-of-seven from the charity stripe to go along with three steals.
Britney Schroer and
Monique Contreras added nine points apiece while
Ashley Rubio had seven points and 10 boards.
Pasiko Hvichiani added six points, eight rebounds and 10 assists.
Olivia Shannon added five points while
Alliyana Page and
Olivia Adams had two points apiece.
Trailing 5-2, Shepherd canned a three-ball off a pass from Hvichiani. Schroer was on the end of a pass from Hvichiani and promptly made a lay-up at the 7:07 mark. Two free throws by Shepherd gave the visitors a 9-5 advantage. Leading 11-10, Rubio hit Contreras for a lay-up just before the end of the period for a 13-10 edge.
The Bulldogs held a 34-29 advantage at halftime, but Minjarez's squad outscored the home team 36-22 over the final 20 minutes of action.
York started the third frame on a 9-0 spurt. Hvichiani nailed a three-point bucket just 44 seconds into the quarter. Shannon found Schroer for a lay-up, knotting the score at 34-34. Rubio connected on a pair of inside shots for a four-point lead at the 7:19 mark. The back-and-forth affair saw McPherson take a 44-42 lead before Hvichiani made a pass to Shepherd, who calmly netted a shot from distance. Down 46-45, Shepherd hit Adams for a jumper with 10 ticks on the clock for a 47-46 margin going into the fourth quarter.
Shepherd hit a three-pointer and a foul shot to open the final frame for a 51-46 edge. Up 51-48, Hvichiani connected with Shepherd for a shot from downtown. A Hvichiani free throw extended the lead to seven, 55-48. With the score at 57-51, Rubio made a pair of free throws. Shepherd made a lay-up with 4:01 to go, pushing the margin to 10, 61-51.
The Bulldogs cut the deficit to nine, 62-53, but Shepherd canned a three-ball at the 2:38 mark.
For the game, York hit 21-of-60 from the floor, including eight-of-21 from downtown. The squad buried 15-of-19 from the charity stripe. The Panthers held a 38-34 edge on the glass and maintained the lead for 20:32. Minjarez's team dished out 18 assists and tallied 10 second-chance points.
