STERLING, Kan. – The York University baseball program posted a pair of victories at Sterling Friday afternoon by scores of 8-7 and 12-2, completing the three-game KCAC sweep.
The Panthers are now 4-5 on the season, including 3-0 in league play.
Head coach
Brian Walth's team trailed 1-0 in the top of the second in the first game of the day.
Sam Hodoly was hit by a pitch and took second on a failed pick-off. After taking third, he scored on a groundout by
Landon Morgan, tying the game.
Down 2-1 in the fourth,
Isaac Gomez recorded an infield single and scored on
Jay Twedt's double. York took a 3-2 lead in the sixth. Twedt led off the stanza with a walk and hustled to second on a wild pitch. With two down, Morgan ripped a single to left, driving in Twedt for the go-ahead run, 3-2.
The Panthers broke open the game in the ninth.
Gio Tarin drew a walk and went to second when
Kodai Namba was hit by a pitch. Tarin scored when
Jose Martinez reached on an error. Gomez doubled home Namba and Martinez before Twedt's triple extended the lead to four, 7-3. With two down, Morgan's base knock drove in Twedt to make it 8-3.
Sterling plated four runs in the ninth, but York shut the door on the comeback turning a game-ending double play at the plate.
For the game, Gomez, Morgan and Twedt had two hits apiece. Twedt tallied a triple and a double while Gomez doubled. Each drove in two and scored twice. Morgan registered two hits and drove in three.
On the mound,
Elvin Ramos got the start and worked six innings allowing just two runs. He recorded seven strikeouts.
Cameron Castor tossed the next two frames and had three strikeouts, while earning the win.
Jaret Mello worked the ninth and had a strikeout.
Game two saw the Panthers race to a 6-0 lead in the first stanza. Martinez and Gomez reached before Twedt walked to load the bags. Hodoly promptly doubled home two. Morgan's sacrifice fly plated Twedt and
Thomas Bonde's base knock drove in
Nathan Eisenmenger, who entered as a pinch runner. Moments later, Tarin doubled in two for the six-run cushion.
Up 6-1 in the second, Bonde's base hit to third base drove in Eisenmenger and
Marek Stone. Morgan scored when
Ryder Williams reached on an error, extending the score to 9-1.
Sterling added a run in the fourth to make it 9-2.
York struck for three runs in the seventh. Tarin singled and swiped second. After a walk to Gomez, Tarin stole third. Both runners were able to trot home on Twedt's three-run blast for the final tally.
For the game, Martinez, Twedt, Hodoly, Bonde, Williams and Tarin had two hits apiece. Twedt and Bondt tallied three RBI apiece. Hodoly and Tarin knocked in two. Gomez, Eisenmenger and Twedt each scored twice.
On the mound,
Bryce Woodard got the start and got the win. He tossed five frames and had five strikeouts.
Austin Copeland worked the final two frames and gave up just one hit.
