Baseball: Bonde hits first career home run, but Panthers fall to Swedes

LINDSBORG, Kan. – The York University baseball team dropped a hard fought 13-12 contest at Bethany Tuesday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 5-9 on the season.

Head coach Brian Walth's team jumped out to a 5-0 lead through the first two at bats. In the top of the first, Jose Martinez drew a walk, went to second on a wild pitch and hustled to third on a groundout. Two batters later, Sam Hodoly knocked a single to second base for a 1-0 advantage.

In the second, Bryce Gorecki drew a walk and Ryan Johnston entered as a pinch runner before Nathan Eisenmenger singled. Kodai Namba tripled both runners home for a 3-0 margin. Moments later, Namba scored on a failed pickoff attempt. Gio Tarin's sacrifice fly pushed Martinez home for a five-run advantage.

Leading 5-3 in the third, Landon Morgan tripled and scored on Marek Stone's base hit. When Eisenmenger reached on an error, Stone scored. Johnston scored on Namba's sacrifice bunt.

Up 8-4 in the fourth, Morgan belted a two-out home run for a 9-4 lead. Leading 9-6 in the ensuing frame, Johnston and Namba reached before Martinez drew a walk. Tarin's double to left center field pushed the advantage to seven, 11-6.

Bethany battled back and took a 12-11 lead in the bottom of the seventh. However, York knotted the game in the ninth. Thomas Bonde entered as a pinch hitter with one down and promptly blasted a solo homer, knotting the contest.

Bethany recorded the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

For the game, Eisenmenger and Morgan led the way with two hits apiece. Morgan and Bonde tallied a round-tripper apiece. Namba and Tarin drove in three RBI each. Johnston scored three times while Martinez, Morgan and Namba crossed home twice apiece.
