Baseball: Panthers score eight runs in 8th inning to earn split against Eagles

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The York University baseball team scored eight runs in the eighth for a 9-5 victory over Avila in the series opener before falling 13-9 in the nightcap. 
 
The Panthers are now 10-18 overall, including 8-9 in KCAC action. 
 
Head coach Brian Walth's team trailed 5-0 entering the seventh inning. Sam Hodoly took a 2-0 offering and hammered it over the left field wall, slicing the deficit to four, 5-1. 
 
In the eighth, the Panthers high-octane offense got going. Gio Tarin and Jose Martinez drew walks. With one down, Landon Morgan singled to left, loading the bases. A bases loaded walk to Jay Twedt pushed in Tarin. Hodoly followed it with his second home run of the day – this time a grand slam – for a 6-5 lead. 
 
Marek Stone After a wild pitch, Ryan Johnston entered as a pinch runner. He moved to third on Nathan Eisenmenger's walk on a wild pitch. After a pitching change, Hunter Arellano singled home Johnston. Tarin doubled in Eisenmenger and moments later, Morgan knocked in Trace Hall crossed home for a four-run margin.  
 
For the game, Morgan had three hits, including a triple. Hodoly had a pair of hits – both of which went for round-trippers. He drove in five. Eisenmenger and Tarin each had doubles. 
 
On the mound, Bryce Woodard got the start and worked 4.2 innings. Woodard tallied a strikeout. Jaret Mello worked three frames and had a strikeout. Sam Reynolds worked 1.1 innings and notched two strikeouts. 
 
Game two saw Avila take a 3-0 lead, but the Panthers knotted the contest in the second. Hodoly walked and moved to second on Stone's base hit to center field. With both in scoring position, Twedt doubled home his teammates and took third on an error. Eisenmenger's sacrifice fly pushed Twedt home while tying the score at 3-3.
 
Trailing 7-3 in the third, Morgan singled and went to second on a wild pitch. Hodoly was hit by a pitch and Stone's single loaded the bags. Twedt's groundout allowed Morgan to make it 7-4. In the fourth, Tarin earned a one-out walk. Martinez was hit by a pitch and Petersen launched a three-run shot over the left field wall, tying the game at 7-7.
 
Avila scored two in the fourth and two in the fifth, but York scored a run in the sixth. With two down, Petersen doubled and Kodai Namba entered as a pinch runner. He scored on Morgan's double to right center field.  
 
Down 13-8 in the seventh, Eisenmenger reached on a fielder's choice. Arellano singled to right field, pushing Eisenmenger to third. Tarin's sacrifice fly made it 13-9.
 
For the game, Twedt led the way with three hits and three RBI. Petersen had two hits – a home run and a double – and tallied three RBI. Morgan and Stone had two hits apiece.
 
On the mound, James McCown threw 1.2 innings. Ruben Colliander tossed one-third of a frame. Cameron Castor tossed two innings and had a strikeout. Dakota Angielski threw two innings and recorded three strikeouts.
