Baseball: York comes from behind to beat Avila in extra innings to win the series

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The York University baseball team scored four runs to tie the game in the ninth before plating four in the 10th for a 13-9 road win at Avila Sunday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 11-18 on the year, including 9-9 in KCAC action.

Head coach Brian Walth's team trailed 4-0 but broke through in the fifth stanza. Jose Martinez led things off with a single to right field and scampered to third on Gio Tarin's double to right center field. Two batters later, Austin Petersen knocked both runners in with a double to the gap in left center field.

York tied the score in the sixth inning. Marek Stone led off the inning with a single to right field, but he was erased when Jay Twedt reached on a fielder's choice. After Twedt swiped second, Hunter Arellano doubled him home. Two batters later, Tarin smacked a single to center field, plating Arellano and knotting the score at 4-4.

Trailing 5-4 in the seventh, Petersen drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on Landon Morgan's base knock to left field. A sacrifice bunt pushed both runners up and Stone recorded a single to right field, driving in Kodai Namba, who entered as a pinch runner.

Avila scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 7-5 lead. Trailing 9-5 in the ninth, Petersen singled and Ryan Johnston entered as a pinch runner. He promptly took second on a wild pitch. Morgan drew a full count walk and Johnston hustled to third on another wild pitch before a walk to Sam Hodoly loaded the bags. Two batters later, Twedt walked, driving in a run. Morgan scored when Arellano reached on an error. Bryce Gorecki entered as a pinch runner and Jose Martinez tied the game with a single to center field, driving in Hodoly and Twedt.

In the 10th, Morgan doubled with one down. Hodoly was intentionally walked and Noah Prasad came in as a pinch runner. Stone's base hit loaded the bases for Twedt, who walked, allowing Morgan to trot home. Thomas Bonde pinch hit and drove in Prasad on a sacrifice fly, giving the team an 11-9 edge. Martinez extended the lead to 13-9 on a double to right field.

For the game, Martinez led the way with four hits and four RBI. Morgan tallied three hits and scored twice. Stone had three hits. Tarin and Petersen had two hits apiece. Petersen, Arellano and Twedt each had two RBI while Twedt scored three times.
