HILLSBORO, Kan. – The York University baseball team split a doubleheader at Tabor College Sunday, knocking of the Bluejays 11-8 before dropping the nightcap 18-8.
The Panthers are now 7-13 on the season, including 5-5 in KCAC action.
In the opener, head coach
Brian Walth's team got on the board in the fifth stanza. With two away,
Isaac Gomez blasted a 1-0 pitch over the wall for a 1-0 lead.
Sam Hodoly pushed the margin to a pair of runs with a solo blast in the top of the sixth.
Austin Petersen was hit by a pitch and
Kodai Namba entered as a pinch runner. He was able to trot home when
Landon Morgan crushed the first pitch he saw over the fence for a 4-0 margin.
York continued the offensive aggression in the seventh as
Isaac Gomez posted a first-pitch single to left field.
Gio Tarin's base hit put two on and an error allowed Gomez to score after stealing third. Later in the frame,
Landon Morgan's single pushed across
Jose Martinez and
Nathan Eisenmenger.
Jay Twedt's sacrifice fly scored Petersen while
Aiden Knoernschild's double scored Morgan for a 9-0 lead.
Tarin smacked a two-run home run in the eighth, scoring Gomez, who had singled.
For the game, Gomez went five-for-five with one home run, two doubles and three runs scored. Morgan tallied two hits, drove in four and scored twice. Tarin had two hits and two RBI. Morgan, Tarin and Hodoly all notched home runs.
On the mound,
Bryce Woodard worked seven innings and had five strikeouts.
James McCown went 1.1 frames and had a strikeout.
Cameron Castor entered and got the final two outs in the 11-8 victory.
Game two saw the Panthers jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Jose Marinez doubled to center field and scored on Hodoly's bae knock. Three batters later, Twedt's sacrifice fly made it 2-0.
Down 6-2 in the third, Petersen scored on a passed ball. He had doubled to open the frame. York continued to cut into the deficit and tied the game in the fourth. Martinez singled and took second on an error. Martinez scored when Petersen reached on an error. Moments later, Twedt singled and moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch as did
Mason Gorecki, who entered as a pinch runner. Gomez promptly singled home both, tying the game.
Tabor responded with six runs in the fourth and one in the fifth for a 13-6 lead. York struck back in the sixth. Petersen singled with one away and Ryder Willians entered as a pinch runner. Morgan singled, putting two on and Williams scored on a fielder's choice by Twedt. Gomez reached on an error, allowing Morgan to score, making it 13-8.
The Bluejays scored five runs in the bottom of the stanza, pushing the margin to 10, 18-8.
For the game, Martin and Petersen had two hits each. Martin scored twice. Gomez and Twedt each drove in two in the nightcap.
On the mound,
Elvin Ramos got the start and worked 1.1 innings with three strikeouts.
Jaret Mellow worked 2.1 innings and had a strikeout.
Ruben Colliander struck out a batter before
Jackson Taylor tossed 1.1 frames with three strikeouts.
Nate Dalizon had a pair of strikeouts.
