Baseball: Panthers split with Spires behind strong outing from Ramos

ORK, Neb. – The York University baseball team split a doubleheader against Saint Mary on Friday, falling 4-3 in the opener before winning 7-0 in the nightcap.

The Panthers are now 16-31 on the season, including 14-21 in KCAC action.

Head coach Brian Walth's squad trailed 1-0 early, but the team quickly took the lead. With one down, Landon Morgan singled and took second on a failed pick-off attempt. Two batters later, Nathan Eisenmenger blasted a two-run shot over the left field fence. After Bryce Gorecki doubled down the left field line, Jose Martinez's single to right field allowed Gorecki to cross home for a 3-1 advantage.

Saint Mary scored a run in the fifth and tied the contest with a run in the eighth. The visitors managed to plate a run in the ninth for the final score.

Sam Hodoly tried to get things started for the Panthers in the ninth with a one-out single. Noah Prasad entered as a pinch runner, but he was left stranded.

For the game, Morgan tallied three hits while Eisenmenger and Gio Tarin had two hits apiece. Eisenmenger blasted a two-ru home run. Martinez drove in a run and Gorecki notched a double.

On the mound, Bryce Woodard got the start and logged six frames. He gave up two runs on nine hits and had a strikeout. Sam Reynolds worked the final three innings and gave up two runs, but only one was earned. He also had five strikeouts.

Game two saw York break the scoreless tie in the third inning. Bryce Gorecki reached on an error and Prasad entered as a pinch runner. Martinez's single put runners on the corners. Tarin's groundout allowed Prasad to cross home. Austin Petersen's single to right field plated Martinez.

Isaac Gomez posted a one-out single in the fourth. After moving to second on a Gorecki walk, Martinez's single loaded the bases. Tarin drew a base on balls, making it 3-0.

The Panthers tacked on three runs in the fifth for a 6-0 margin. Hodoly scored on a throwing error and Marek Stone raced home on Gomez's base hit to left field. A sacrifice fly by Gorecki plated Morgan for the final run of the inning.

Hodoly completed the scoring in the sixth when his sacrifice fly drove in Tarin, who had singled earlier in the stanza.

For the game, Gomez, Martinez and Petersen had two hits apiece. Tarin drove in two in the win.
