Baseball: Weather stops regular season finale but Panthers make postseason play

YORK, Neb. – The York University baseball team lost an 8-7 seven-inning contest to Saint Mary Saturday afternoon in the regular-season finale.

The Panthers are now 16-32 on the season, including 14-22 in KCAC action.

Head coach Brian Walth's squad jumped on top with a run in the second inning. Marek Stone was hit by a pitch and took third on Nathan Eisenmenger's double to left center field. After Landon Morgan's fielder's choice erased Stone, another fielder's choice allowed Eisenmenger to race home.

With two out in the second, Austin Petersen and Stone earned back-to-back walks. A base on balls to Eisenmenger loaded the bases for Morgan who promptly singled down the left field line. The base knock plated Petersen and Stone, making it 3-0.

Leading 3-2 in the fourth, Bryce Gorecki launched the first pitch he saw over the left field wall.

Trailing 8-4 in the sixth, Gorecki drew a full-count walk with two outs. Ryan Johnston entered as a pinch runner and took second on Jose Martinez's base hit to right. After a walk to Gio Tarin, Johnston scored on a wild pitch. Petersen smacked a single to second base, knocking in Martinez and Tarin, pulling the team within one, 8-7.

With two down in the seventh, Hunter Arellano and Isaac Gomez each drew a walk. However, a groundout ended the threat.

The game was officially ruled a seven-inning contest due to inclement weather after a lengthy delay.

For the game, Morgan and Petersen each had two RBI. Gorecki smashed a solo home run while Eisenmenger produced a double.

On the mound, Josh McCown got the start and worked four innings and picked up four strikeouts. Brayden Woodard worked two-thirds of an inning. Dakota Angielski struck out a batter. Ruben Colliander worked a scoreless sixth inning while Jaret Mello tossed a scoreless seventh stanza.

The Panthers return to action in the KCAC Tournament against Kansas Wesleyan Wednesday at 7 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
