Baseball: Coyotes beat Panthers in opening game of KCAC Tournament

SALINA, Kan. – The York University baseball team lost a 5-1 decision to No. 1 seed Kansas Wesleyan Wednesday evening in the first round of the KCAC Tournament.
 
The Panthers are now 16-33 on the season. 
 
Head coach Brian Walth's squad trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth inning. Jose Martinez got things going with a single to right field. Two batters later, Landon Morgan recorded a base knock to right field, putting two on. Marek Stone's groundout allowed both runners to move into scoring position. However, a groundout ended the threat.
 
Trailing 2-0 in the sixth, the Panthers got on the board. With two down, Austin Petersen ripped a double to right field. After hustling to third on a passed ball, Morgan belted a base hit to right field on a full count, allowing Petersen to cross home plate, making it 2-1. 
 
The Coyotes scored a run in the bottom of the sixth, pushing the margin back to two, 3-1. The home team scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final tally.
 
For the game, Morgan led the way with three hits and one RBI. Martinez and Petersen notched two hits apiece. Petersen doubled and scored. Isaac Gomez also notched a hit for the designated visitors. 
 
On the mound, Elvin Ramos got the start and worked 7.1 innings. He gave up five runs, three of which were earned, on seven hits. Ramos struck out eight and walked three. Ramos tossed 110 pitches. Ruben Colliander recorded a pair of strikeouts on just 15 pitches to close out the eighth inning. 
 
The Panthers return to action tomorrow when they face fourth-seeded Friends University at 3:30 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
