Men's Soccer: Panthers score two late goals in come from behind win

Box Score

CRETE - York College scored two goals in a three minute span to pick up the 3-2 win over host Doane University on Wednesday night. With just over seven minutes remaining in the game, Matheus Oliveira (JR/Resende, Brazil) found Alan Gomes (FR/Fortaleza, Brazil) for the game-tying goal. Just two and a half minutes later the roles reversed as Gomes dished a pass off to Oliveira for a nice finish to give the Panthers their first lead of the game.

York's defense stood strong the final four and a half minutes and prevented the Tigers from evening things up. Coach Alex Latorre said "I was really proud of the guys tonight. They fought extremely hard and never gave up. They did a great job of adjusting when we had to switch up our formation due to injuries, and allowed the adjustments to make them better."

Cameron Merrill (SO/Edmond, Okla) found the back of the net first for the Panthers in the 18th minute of play as he headed in the ball past Tiger goalkeeper Nishesh Yadav. Jovanny Ruiz (SO/Oklahoma City, Okla) started the sequence as he had a free kick that he placed on the head of Nathan Buzi (FR/Kinshasa, Congo), who then headed it over to the jumping Merrill, tying the game at one.

York was out shot 22-13 on the game but head strong when it mattered the most. Francisco Esteves (FR/Tomar, Portugal) picked up the win as he was credited with 12 saves for the Panthers.

York improves to 2-3 on the season and has some time off before they travel to Sioux City, Iowa on Sep. 23 for a matchup against Briar Cliff.
