Panthers beat Coyotes in KCAC upset

Box Score

YORK - The Panthers picked up their first conference win of the season as they defeated Kansas Wesleyan 63-62 on Wednesday night. Yionis Keith (SO/Oklahoma City, Okla) made the go-ahead shot with 2.3 seconds remaining to secure the win.

The Panthers had three players score in double figures. Keith led the Panthers with 16 points. She also led the team with four assists. Deja Derrell (SR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Amaia Diez (JR/Pamplona, Spain) each scored 15 points, while Sadie Pittman (SR/Eudora, Kan.) pulled in 10 rebounds.

York started off the game strong making five of their six attempts from beyond the arc. The team outscored the Coyotes 21-17 in the first quarter as Keith made a deep three-pointer off of the assist by Catie Whitehead (JR/New Port Richey, Fla).

The second quarter was a struggle for the Panthers as they made just two baskets all quarter. Trujillo scored from inside the paint with 9:09 remaining and the Panthers didn't score again until 3:30 remained when Brileigh Slaughter (FR/Lake Charles, La.) scored on a pull-up jumper. The Coyotes also struggled from the floor in the quarter but still were able to hold a 29-24 advantage going into the half after outscoring York 12-4 in the period.

York stepped up their game again in the second half shooting 52% from the floor, including 5-for-9 from beyond the arc. The Coyotes were able to hang in there as they were a perfect 19-of-19 from the charity stripe. The Coyotes went up 43-37 with two minutes left in the third period before coach Corinna Latorre called a timeout. The Panthers scored another basket before the end of the period as they trailed 39-43 heading into the final period.

Amaia Diez led the quarter off with a long three-pointer to get the Panthers rolling in the final period. She followed it up with another basket before the Panthers took a 47-45 lead when Keith hit her fourth three-point field goal of the game. Over the course of the next five minutes of play the Panthers matched their largest lead of the ball game leading 61-55 with 2:14 remaining.

The Coyotes didn't back down as they made a quick three-pointer and forced three turnovers in the final two minutes. With just 13 seconds remaining the Coyotes tied the game on a second-chance basket, and took the lead as Kelcey Hinz made the free throw for the and-one. Coach Latorre took her final timeout and moved the ball up to halfcourt. A quick draw up of a play during the timeout had Keith moving around a defender and pulled up in the lane to take the shot. She was fouled on the shot for a chance at the old-fashioned three-point play. She missed the free throw but a defensive stop gave the Panthers the upset and their first-ever win over the Coyotes.

York improves to 3-6 on the season and will travel to Avila University on Saturday afternoon. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. tip.
