Panthers fall short in comeback at Friends

Box Score

Wichita, KAN. - York College rallied back from a 14-point deficit but was unable to leave Wichita with the upset win. The host Falcons survived the upset with the 65-62 win.

Amaia Diez (JR/Pamplona, Spain) led the Panthers with 15 points and eight rebounds. Julia Trujillo (SR/Denver, Colo) added 13, while Sadie Pittman (SR/Eudora, Kan.) was right behind with 12. Brileigh Slaughter (FR/Lake Charles, La.) scored 10 points off of the bench, but she was limited to just 17 minutes of play due to foul trouble.

After trailing by 14 in the second quarter the Panthers trailed by just two points going into the final period. The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth effort by both teams as the Panthers got within one point several times but could never take the lead. Amaia Diez put back a Deja Derrell (SR/Colorado Springs, Colo.) miss with 2:43 remaining in the game. However, the Falcons made a three-point basket to go up 63-59. Sadie Pittman made a shot from the outside to put the Panthers back within one possession at 63-61. A big defensive stop in the final minute had York looking to tie the game. Diez was fouled and forced to the charity line. She missed her first attempt and then made her second to put the game at 63-62. With the advantage still in Friends' favor the Panthers forced a turnover on the ensuing possession. With under 10 seconds remaining Julia Trujillo had a chance to put York ahead but missed the field goal attempt. Sadie Pittman collected the rebound and also put up an attempt that just missed. This forced the Panthers into a fouling situation. The Falcons converted both free throws with just three seconds remaining on the clock. York had less than three seconds to go the length of the court and put up a long-range shot to tie. Unfortunately, the Panthers were unable to get the shot as they turned the ball over.

York used a strong third quarter to get back in the game. After being outscored by 13 points in the second quarter the Panthers used a 21-12 advantage in the third period to get back in the game.

The game-changer was the disadvantage the Panthers had on the boards. Friends outrebounded the Panthers 45-28. The Falcons had 20 offensive rebounds that accounted for 18 second-chance points. That plus-12 in second-chance points was more than the difference in the game.

York will host Bethany College on Monday afternoon with a 4:00 p.m. tip-off.
