Box Score Wichita, KAN. - York College stunned the reigning KCAC champions, Friends University, on Saturday evening as they scored three unanswered goals to win on the road 3-1.
Friends scored a goal in the 16th minute of play that surprised everyone. The Falcons had been shut down in the offensive third for the first part of the game, but a ball squeaked through and the Falcons capitalized like one would expect the KCAC champions to do. Even with the early score the Panthers didn't panic and shut down the Falcons the rest of the half.
After the break, it was all York as Alexandre Motta (JR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) found Otavio Avila (SO/Morro Redondo, RS Brazil) for the equalizer in the 47th minute. Less than three minutes later Motta would score the eventual game-winner off of a corner kick by Matias Castano (JR/Payson, Utah).
The Falcons had some chances throughout the second half, but none threatened much as Ethan Harkless (FR/Greeley, CO) kept the ball out of the net for the final 45 minutes. Harkless picked up his first win in his first collegiate start.
Avila headed his second goal in the 65th minute after a pass from Sebastian Sanhueza (SO/Santiago, Chile) found him in the middle of the penalty area.
York was outshot 15-12 on the day, but it was the backline of the Panthers that held strong and didn't allow a dangerous threat after the 16th minute.
York improves to 1-1 on the season and will travel to Sterling College on Saturday for their next KCAC match.
