Box Score North Newton, KAN. - York College had to battle from behind for their first KCAC win of the season at Bethel College on Tuesday night. After falling behind two games the Panthers battled back to win the final three to take the match 3-2 behind scores of 22-25, 13-25, 25-16, 25-22, 15-11.
York jumped ahead early in the first game to leading 10-5 before the Threshers went on a 14-2 run to take the lead 19-12. York fought back but was unable to overcome the deficit to take the game. Bethel controlled game two with the Panthers struggling offensively as they picked up just two kills in the game and fell behind by 11 points midway through the set.
In between games head coach Crystal Nething pleaded with her team to be tougher and fight to overcome the mishaps that were happening. Her plea was heard as the Panthers went on a run of their own and led 22-13 before taking the game 25-16. With the momentum on their side the Panthers battled to stay alive in the fourth set building a 19-12 lead. The Threshers would put the pressure on as they battled to a 21-20 score. A quick timeout allowed the Panthers to regroup and force a fifth and deciding set.
York battled hard all night and the final set was no different as the Panthers found themselves behind 5-9 with the game scheduled to go to 15. After another Panther timeout York rattled off 10 of the final 12 points including the final six points and won 15-11.
Offensively the Panthers were led by Danielle Armendariz with 15 kills on .294 hitting. Brooke Halterman finished with eight kills. Darby Wright was strong setting the ball as usual finishing with 34 assists. Defensively the Panthers had four players with double-digit digs led by Alexandria Garcia with 19. Elisa Cardona added 12 while Shiloh Lively picked up 11 and Wright finished with 10.
York moves to 5-12 on the season and snaps a seven match losing streak. York will be back in the Freeman Center on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. match as they host Friends University.
