Wichita, Kan. - The York College Panthers looked to upset the third seeded Friends University Falcons in the semifinals of the KCAC tournament. However, after holding a 3-1 lead in the 60th minute, the Falcons showed why they were the third seed as they scored five goals in the final 26 minutes to win 6-3.
Johan Rodriguez (SO/Texas City, Texas) put the pressure on the Falcons as he scored in the sixth minute off a pass from Alexandre Motta (FR/Sao Paulo, Brazil). Rodriguez would score again in the 28th minute to stun the host team. Friends jumped on the board three minutes later as the score remained 2-1 at the intermission.
York's Arturo Gutierrez III (FR/Hacienda Heights, Calif) scored on a penalty kick in the 60th minute before the Falcons offensive pressure became too much. Friends scored two goals over the next 15 minutes of play to tie the game at three. Head coach Alex Latorre knew his team needed some more offense so he changed his formation to put pressure up front to try to earn the upset bid. However, the Falcons were able to counter and over the next nine minutes, they put in three goals for the win.
Bryce Kinsey (SR/Wichita, Kan) had 11 saves in his final game as a Panther, but it wasn't enough as the Falcons poured in 18 shots on goal.
Latorre was very proud of his team and the effort they put into not only this game but the entire season. "I'm very proud of these guys. They showed a lot of heart and determination. We are a young team and only lose one starter to graduation. The guys are continually getting better and this game showed how far we've come."
The team didn't win the postseason game like they wanted, but strides were definitely made. The team earned its first double digit win total in 15 years, and also beat Concordia for the first time in 11 years.
