YORK - DeAnte Barnes had a game-high 19 points but that wasn't enough for the Panthers to pull off the upset of the 16th ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles. The Eagles hung on late in the game for a 83-76 win.
York jumped on top early leading by as many as six at 13-7 with just over 13 minutes to play in the first half thanks to Michael Tolbert scoring seven of the team's first 13 points. However, the Eagles showed why they are in the top-25 in the country with a 15-2 run over a five and a half minute run late in the first half. The run gave Oklahoma Wesleyan a 36-28 lead going into the break.
In the second half York battled to keep themselves in the game not allowing the Eagles a bigger lead through the first ten minutes of the half. Victor Lewis got the Panthers back within five points when he made one of two free throws with 14:53 remaining in the game. The Eagles went on a little run and built a 16 point lead with six minutes to go in the game. York did go on a 14-4 run over a four-minute stretch to cut it to 76-70. However, the Panthers couldn't get any closer than a two-possession game in the final minute of the game.
Aside from Barnes, Michael Tolbert finished with 15 points and Victor Lewis added in 12 points. The Panthers did hold a 44-34 advantage on points in the paint. However, the Eagles bench was stellar as they outscored their own starting five with a 58 burst.
York will travel to McPherson College on Saturday, another tough game against an opponent that is currently second in the KCAC.
