Box Score YORK - York College had upset on their mind as they hosted the 5th ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan Eagles on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles were bringing a perfect record into the Cornerstone Complex and the Panthers had only won one game on the year. However, that didn't phase the Panthers as York battled throughout the contest before falling 4-3.
The Panthers fell behind in the sixth minute as the Eagles height advantage was evident on a corner kick. With a perfectly placed corner the Eagles Bertini outjumped the Panthers backline to head in the first goal of the game. The Eagles scored again in the 13th minute to put themselves up 2-0.
York didn't back down and scored in the 17th minute as Pedro Carvalho (SR/Oklahoma City, Okla) outran the Eagles' goalkeeper and chipped in a shot from 40 yards out. Five minutes later the Panthers tied the game on a beautiful volley by Otavio Avila (SO/Morro Redondo, RS Brazil). He received a long pass from Gabriel Cabral (JR/Campinas, Brazil) before striking the ball in midair with his left foot for the equalizer.
Not to be outdone though the Eagles answered back just four minutes later with a bicycle kick in the box. That would conclude the scoring in the first half as both teams defended well over the final 20 minutes of the half.
It took less than three minutes for the Eagles to score the eventual game-winner as a free-kick was deflected back to an Oklahoma Wesleyan attacker who kicked the ball into the goal.
Avila scored his second goal of the game after receiving a pass across the middle from Tamas Sebestyen (SO/Szekesfehervar, Hungary) in the 66th minute. The Panthers had a few opportunities late in the game but the Eagles kept the Panthers at bay for the final 25 minutes of play.
York accumulated 11 shots on the day, while the Eagles garnered 16. Ethan Harkless (FR/Greeley, CO) picked up three saves while the defensive line picked up a team save to prevent a fifth goal by Oklahoma Wesleyan.
York will host Southwestern College in another KCAC match this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at the Cornerstone Complex.
