Panthers have strong showing at Falcon Open

WICHITA, Kan. – The York University men's wrestling team opened the season with a solid effort at the Falcon Open Saturday.

Luis Vela picked up two points in the 125 lb. class at the Falcon Open Amateur. After moving to the consolation bracket, he picked up a major decision victory over his foe by a 12-2 score. He lost a hard-fought match in round four of the bracket.

Also in the same class, Ernest Grant garnered 12.5 points. After a first-round bye, he won via tech. fall over his opponent from Morningside by a 17-1 score. In the consolation bracket, he notched another tech. fall win, this time by a 15-0 count against his foe from Missouri Baptist. Grant tallied a win via fall at 2:57 against his next opponent. Grant tallied a tech. fall win (15-0) and one via fall (3:51) to reach the consolation semifinals.

In the 157 lb. class, Kade Wersland accounted for four points. In the second round, he posted a fall in 5:42.

Jaydon Dungan registered 17.5 points in the 165 lb. division. He notched back-to-back wins via falls in his first two matches, coming in 2:48 and 6:34. His victory in 1:43 put him in the semifinals. After a loss in the semifinals, he reached the third-place match and won via forfeit.

Caleb Davis earned three points in the 174 lb. class. He notched back-to-back wins via decisions (10-4 and 8-7) to reach the quarterfinals. In that match, Davis won 9-3 before falling in the semifinals and consolation semifinals.

In the 184 lb. division, Cameron Campos scored 2.5 points. His victory came via a fall in 2:14 in the opening round of the consolation bracket. Teammate Dayton Fraser scored 8.5 points in the class. He opened the tournament with a victory via fall in 2:20, but lost his next match. In the consolation bracket, Fraser won via fall (4:25), decision (12-9) and another fall (5:00) before losing in the fifth round of the bracket.

In the 285 lb. division, Malaki Morales-Perez scored six points while Nash Crane scored three. Morales-Perez won via falls in 6:45 and 2:35 before falling in the quarterfinals. Crane picked up a victory in a fall in just 57 seconds.

In the Falcon Open Elite portion of the meet, only two student-athletes recorded points.

Hector Holguin scored 1.5 points in the 133 lb. class. He notched a major decision win (12-4) in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Marce Vasquez lost his opening match, but he bounced back in the consolation bracket. He received a bye before posting a 9-3 win. Vasquez garnered a victory via a fall in 1:37 to reach the fifth round of the bracket.

The Panthers return to action Friday, Nov. 8 at the Benedictine Duals starting at 10 a.m.
